The Story Behind JS Tree Techs
Veteran-Owned, ISA Certified, Rooted in Community.
At JS Tree Techs, we believe tree care is more than just a service, it’s a responsibility. We're here to protect your trees, your property, and your peace of mind through science-based practices, safety focused work, and a deep commitment to educating our neighbors.
Our Story: From Fire Lines to Tree Lines
Joel Small, founder of JS Tree Techs, began his journey in 2008 as a nationally certified tree climber with the U.S. Forest Service. He worked on wildland firefighting teams, protecting forest ecosystems, navigating extreme environments, and learning firsthand the vital role trees play in our safety, landscapes, and lives.
Later, Joel went on to serve 8½ years in the U.S. military, earning the rank of sergeant and working in operations, maintenance, and leadership roles. After his service, he earned degrees in mathematics and business management and moved into the private sector, leading operations and safety teams in manufacturing environments.
Still, something kept pulling him back—to the trees, and to the mission.
Who We Are & Why It Matters
-
During his return to firefighting and field work, Joel noticed a troubling pattern: a major gap in tree care knowledge and integrity. Across the Dallas–Fort Worth area and beyond, he saw healthy trees being removed unnecessarily, homeowners receiving poor advice, and a lack of certified expertise in the industry.
So he founded JS Tree Techs with a simple mission:
Deliver honest, science-based tree care while giving back to the community through education.
-
We believe every homeowner deserves access to trustworthy, professional arboriculture services. That’s why we operate with:
ISA Certification, backed by continuing education and international standards
A deep respect for tree biology, urban forestry, and long-term care
A focus on safety, ethics, and environmental responsibility
A strong local presence across Keller, Grapevine, Fort Worth, Southlake, North Arlington, and beyond

We’re focused on raising the standard for arboriculture in DFW by staying true to what matters most:
Honest advice – Every recommendation is based on tree health and safety, not selling more work.
Clear communication – We take time to explain what’s happening with your trees in simple, helpful terms.
Lasting care – Our work isn’t about quick fixes. It’s about preserving trees and protecting your property long-term.
Respectful service – From showing up on time to cleaning up the site, we treat every job like it’s our own.
Community focus – We believe in giving back, sharing knowledge, and supporting the people we serve.

-
Absolutely! Our goal is to preserve healthy trees whenever possible. We don’t rush to cut just to make a sale. Every tree we inspect is evaluated by a Certified Arborist, and we’ll look at structural stability, disease, root health, and safety.
If there’s a safe and realistic way to save your tree, we’ll explain it clearly and let you decide. If not, we’ll recommend the most cost-effective and low-impact removal option. -
You can do light trimming of small, reachable branches—but for anything involving climbing, large limbs, power lines, or tree health, we strongly recommend calling a certified arborist. DIY mistakes often cause more harm (and cost) than good.
-
Pruning helps a tree stay healthy and strong: it removes dead or risky branches to improve growth and safety.
Trimming is more about looks and space: like clearing branches from your roof or shaping a tree.
We always focus on your tree’s health first and explain the best plan for both safety and appearance. -
There are a few signs that a tree might be in trouble:
Dead or falling branches
Mushrooms or fungus growing at the base
Cracks in the trunk or peeling bark
Sparse leaves or leaves turning brown early
A noticeable lean or shifting in the roots
These could mean the tree is sick, stressed, or even dying. But not all signs are obvious, sometimes what’s happening inside the tree is more serious than what you see on the outside.
If you're unsure, it's always best to have a Certified Arborist take a look. We can perform a professional tree inspection and let you know if your tree can be treated, or if removal is the safest option.
